Urine sediment/microscopic investigation The cellular constituents identified in the urine sediment include WBCs, RBCs, epithelial cells, and, in rare cases, tumour cells. WBC counts of 2-5 WBCs/hpf or fewer are considered normal. Infection, inflammation, or contamination are all signs of a large number of WBCs.

Pyuria is characterised by the presence of white blood cells or pus in the urine. It can be a symptom of a bacterial urinary tract infection if there are 6-10 neutrophils per high power field of unspun, voided mid-stream urine. Pyuria can occur in patients who have sepsis or who are older and have pneumonia.
