Lipid profile test or lipid panel test is a blood test that is done to assess a person’s cardiac risk factor. It is done by drawing venous blood after a period of 9-12 hours of fasting. 

This test measures the total serum cholesterol, serum triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, & VLDL cholesterol.

A lipid panel is a blood test used by healthcare providers to monitor and screen for cardiovascular disease risk. Three tests of your cholesterol levels and a measurement of your triglycerides are included in the panel.

Healthy adults should get their first lipid panel test at the age of 40, and their cholesterol should be tested every 4 to 6 years, according to the USPSTF. People with heart disease or diabetes, as well as those with a family history of high cholesterol, should have their cholesterol checked more frequently. Adults who have certain conditions (diabetes, heart disease) or who smoke may be examined early.
