What is malaria? Who is susceptible to malaria? In South Africa, where does malaria occur? What is the mode of transmission of malaria? Is malaria harmful to animals? What are the symptoms of malaria and how can you know if you have it? Malaria is diagnosed in one of two ways. What is the treatment for malaria?
Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, and Plasmodium malariae are the four types of malaria parasites that infect humans.
After a diagnosis has been established by smear microscopy or RDT, PCR is most useful for confirming the species of malarial parasite. Serology uses indirect immunofluorescence (IFA) or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays to identify antibodies against malaria parasites (ELISA).
Blood stains of various thicknesses. A lab technician or nurse will draw sample of your blood and send it to a lab where it will be stained to reveal any parasites. It's spread out on a glass slide and examined under a microscope by the technician.
Two hosts are involved in the malaria parasite's life cycle. A malaria-infected female Anopheles mosquito inoculates sporozoites into the human host during a blood meal. Sporozoites infect liver cells, grow into schizonts, and then burst, releasing merozoites.
