Frequently Asked Questions about Myelocyte

A myelocyte is a big cell found in bone marrow that matures into a granulocyte, whereas a metamyelocyte is a cell undergoing granulopoiesis, produced from a myelocyte, and leads to a band cell; it has a bent nucleus, cytoplasmic granules, and no visible nucleoli.

Stem cells develop into various types of progenitors, or blast cells; normoblasts give rise to red blood cells (erythrocytes), while myeloblasts give rise to granulocytes, a form of white blood cell (leukocyte).

The myeloblast is a unipotent stem cell that develops into the granulocyte series' effectors. It's located in the marrow of the bones. G-CSF and other cytokines stimulate myeloblast development, differentiation, proliferation, and cell survival.

Because of the additional cell divisions, the number of promyelocytes and myelocytes in the bone marrow normally increases after infection. The term "neutrophil left shift" refers to an aberrant increase in immature neutrophils in the circulation.

Metamyelocytes and myelocytes are occasionally observed in peripheral blood, but their presence usually signifies infection, inflammation, or a primary bone marrow disease. Progranulocytes or blast forms in the peripheral blood always signal the presence of a significant illness process.
