Healthy adults should get their first lipid panel test at the age of 40, and their cholesterol should be tested every 4 to 6 years, according to the USPSTF. People with heart disease or diabetes, as well as those with a family history of high cholesterol, should have their cholesterol checked more frequently. Adults who have certain conditions (diabetes, heart disease) or who smoke may be examined early.
